Now, emo originated with a music scene.The so-called "indie emo" scene survived until the late 1990s, as many of the bands either disbanded or shifted to mainstream styles. As the remaining indie emo bands entered the mainstream, newer bands began to emulate the mainstream style. As a result, the term "emo" became a vaguely defined identifier rather than a specific genre of music. There's always something new and changing on the emo scene, so make sure to keep up!
Now "emo" refers to more than just music, it is a culture of it's own. Here's your stereotypical emo kid's myspace emo layouts:

Of course, we're not all sterotypical, now are we? But, as emo moves more mainstream, of course so do the stereotypes.
